THUNK, formerly Melodious Thunk, was founded at Northwestern University in 1992 and is the oldest a cappella group on campus. It is a sixteen member, co-ed music ensemble which is entirely student produced and directed. While many a cappella groups have been formed on campus since then, none has been able to capture the unique style, impeccable musicality, and amazing diversity of the original group. Since its inception into the Northwestern community in 1992 (and to a greater extent, those of Evanston and Chicago) THUNK has sought to share the gift of music with others and to provide an outlet for music development. Thunk performs two sold out shows every year, drawing a crowd of more than 1,500 college students, Chicagoland residents, and University faculty and alumni. In addition, THUNK is regularly asked to perform at major events throughout the Chicagoland area. In the past, THUNK has also performed at inner city schools, mental institutions, charity drives, galas, and even the Northwestern University President’s Convocation. The singers of THUNK are some of the most talented individuals in the entire country, let alone on Northwestern’s campus. Upon graduating from the University, the alumni of the group continue their successes on some of the greatest stages in the country, both on Broadway and in Chicago’s top theatres. Currently there are THUNK alumni performing nightly on Broadway in the Tony-Award winning shows Hairspray and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. In Chicago, you can find members of THUNK gracing the stages of the Steppenwolf, Lookingglass, and Marriott theatres. Also, THUNK alum Sabrina Sloan appeared on season 6 of American Idol in the top 24! THUNK has progressed far beyond the narrow constraints accepted by most student performance groups. Some performance highlights include: • Women In Catering Gala at the Tavern Club, Michigan Ave. Chicago, Illinois • Women In Catering Gala at Architectural Artifacts, Chicago, Illinois • Stuart Rodgers Photography, Chicago, Illinois • Joint concert with world-renowned Indian a cappella group Penn Masala at Cahn Auditorium, Chicago, Illinois • Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Illinois • Wrigley Field • The Ottawa School Arts Festival, Ottawa, IL • Education workshop and outreach The Orrington School, Evanston, Illinois • Educational Outreach program for inner city Chicago schools (on going) • Royal National Theatre Lobby Stage- London, England • Westminster Abbey, London, England • McGill University, Montreal, Quebec • Educational Outreach Michelangelo Elementary, Montreal, Quebec • Pfizer Drug Corporation • 2005 and 2006 Cape Town, South Africa Tour After sixteen years, THUNK has established itself as one of the most exciting, innovative, and talented groups of young artists in the Chicagoland area.
