Contemporary Acappella Recording Awards

There exists an entire community of music-makers that dedicate their time and/or careers to making music with nothing but the human voice. This community has grown enormously over the past three decades and now includes lovers of all kinds of music, united in the common goal of expanding the horizons of what can be produced without instruments. Recorded a cappella has an appeal all its own. By taking what can be captured in live performance, and using studio techniques similar to those used by the biggest stars of today, a cappella music - be it classical, jazz, rock, or hip-hop - has reached a new height. As the industry of recorded a cappella grows, our music form is reaching new fans and inspiring new singers daily. The annual Contemporary A cappella Recording Awards (CARA) recognize the best of recorded a cappella music. We are the only truly global a cappella recording awards. Every year since 1992 hundreds of albums are considered in this celebration of the best a cappella recorded around the planet. The CARA mission reflects that of its parent organization, the Contemporary A cappella Society (CASA) : we aim to reward artists that create outstanding work and to promote innovation, creativity, and continued growth of the a cappella modality. Furthermore, we aim to foster the a cappella community by having its best and brightest participate in the CARA nomination and judging process. Finally, we use our application process as a means to provide resources to charitable programs such as Tunes to Teens . Categories and Awards The Contemporary A cappella Recording Awards honor artists in a variety of categories. Specific categories and number of awards is subject to change each year based on the number of submissions received. Despite this variation, there are several broad categories that tend to recur every year, which are listed below along with which groups are eligible for each. If you have any questions about particular categories and/or the likelihood of a category existing this year, please contact the CARA Director, Julia Hoffman, at cara@casa.org. Group Definitions: • Professional : Artists who are not associated with a school fall into this category, regardless of what percentage of their time or income come from this enterprise. • Contemporary A cappella League (CAL): Groups that are associated with the CASA Contemporary A cappella League program . • Collegiate: Groups that are in any way associated with a college or university fall into this category, regardless of their source of funding or official affiliation. Most college groups have no faculty advisors/directors but the CARAs have no restriction on this for eligibility in the CARAs. • High School: Groups that are in any way associated with a high school fall into this category, regardless of the source of funding or official affiliation.
