The Challenges of Video Production for A Cappella

{mosimage} BOSTON -- A cappella is not your typical musical arrangement. It's entirely vocal, it's usually and inherently intricate, and if done well, impressive. Arranging vocals to serve as percussive and harmonic instruments is at once unique and, again, if done well, a high benchmark for any vocalist. But how do you shoot a video for it? As a videographer (for mainly musical acts), I have a few crutches to fall back on in a pinch. If lit with club lights, a drum kit looks REALLY COOL. A well-slung guitar gives a nice angle and a linear item to play with. There is a focal point usually with a single lead singer. All of that is out the window with an a cappella group. So far I've done videos for two such groups, and both have provided me education not only in conceptual approach, but also an increased appreciation of the form itself.
