Las Vegas A Cappella Summit Wrap-up

This past weekend was the Fourth Annual Las Vegas A Cappella Summit hosted by Desert Oasis High School and their Choral Director Brad Pierson. I was fortunate enough to attend as a performer with The Trojan Men from the University of Southern California. If you were there, you know how awesome it was. If you weren't there, here's what you missed out on... featureimage:

SoJam is the SUMMIT

When I first got involved in a cappella (mid-90’s) there was a mythical, magical appeal to the West Coast A Cappella Summit.  All the groups would find a way to go, it seemed.  It was a gathering of the best a cappella people, it seemed.  A Cappella Nirvana.

The Sing Off: Casting a Wide Net

When moosebutter went into the audition room this past Saturday, auditioning for The Sing Off in Los Angeles, we were in with an Oregon college group, a smooth, old-school quartet of old African-American men, and a couple of groups called m*pact and Mosaic.  featureimage:

GLEEful suspension of belief?

I can suspend my belief for the sake of entertainment.  I can suspend my belief for the sake of an argument, or for an intellectual exercise.   There are some demands on my ability to suspend belief, however, that just go too far.   From a very young age I was acutely aware when musicians in movies or on TV were faking it.  You know, when the conductor of the wedding band in the background of the shot is beating a tempo completely unrelated to the music you're hearing?

Why You Should Audition for The Sing Off

Do yourself a favor: DON'T audition with the delusion that you are going to get on the show.  Statistically, realistically, just assume it ain't gonna happen.  But there are so many reasons to audition anyway! -There is no downside.  There is no negative thing that could happen to you that would outweigh the good that will come from auditioning for The Sing Off.  Only good, for you, and for a cappella at large.
