The Phillipsburg girls proved such a hit on stage that the singing continued after the curtain fell, back in a hotel with adult members of the Sweet Adelines, the society for female barbershop singers.

Cadence singers inspired by jazz

They are different from barbershop quartets or contemporary a cappella groups like The Nylons.

"Our arrangements are jazz inspired," says Aaron Jensen, first tenor of the male a cappella quartet Cadence, performing in Portage and Valparaiso this weekend.

The quartet's repertoire encompasses popular music, spirituals and gospel music, blues and jazz, doo-wop and a touch of the classical.

Manchester choir gets tune-up for Carnegie Hall

NORTH MANCHESTER - Manchester College soprano Katie McCann was only 7 years old when her doting granny declared that she would die a happy woman if she could see her granddaughter perform at Carnegie Hall.

McCann's and her granny's dreams come true on May 26 in a Saturday night performance uniting the college's a cappella choir and its choral alumni with Manchester High School's choir on the stage of that grand, acclaimed New York City venue.

The Heart of Missouri Chorus sings a cappella, focusing on the sound of each word and nuance of every note

On a recent Monday, “Pretty Woman” starts playing, signaling to the members of the Heart of Missouri Chorus that it’s time to begin rehearsal. With Roy Orbison crooning from a boombox, the women move to the music.

The song stops, and the women begin marching in place. They then start humming scales a cappella — in four-part harmony, as they warm up for two hours of singing.
