The group’s immediate goal is to recruit three new members this year. Eventually Day would like to see the membership reach 30.

She said she would love to attract some younger women to the group.

Day, 24, is studying for her Iowa teaching certification at the Buena Vista University Center in Mason City and is substitute teaching in the Mason City School District.

She was contacted eight months ago by a member of Sweet Adelines who knew Day had moved back to Mason City and asked her to be a vocal coach for the group.

She began coaching in May and was hired as the new director a month ago.

“It’s been wonderful,” Day said. “They are a very positive group of women who love to sing and really like working together as a group as well.”

Day was a two-year All State Chorus alto and received many Division I solo and ensemble ratings at the state level while in high school.

She attended Waldorf College for one year before transferring to Southern Illinois, where she conducted her college choir for a time.

Day co-founded and co-directed the Bel Canto Youth Choir in Bethalto, Ill.

She has performed in many countries, including Austria, England, France, Italy, Mexico, Spain and Switzerland.

She also has performed at venues such as the Crystal Cathedral and The Kennedy Center, and has sung in a choir that performed for Vice President Al Gore and the Prime Minister of Japan.

Anyone who is interested in joining Sweet Adelines is invited to attend rehearsals, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays at The Music Man Square, 308 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City. Women of all ages and backgrounds are welcome.
