You've heard it.  Naturally 7's Jamal Reed pulls it off.  Juuust about everybody else sounds mediocre.  Some people just sound dumb. 

The good ole wv (purse lips, please) electric guitar sound.  Or try it a different way and use a distortion pedal from when you were in a band--just sing into it and it should turn your scat into a strat (ah-thank you).  But it doesn't sound right and here's why:

1: Tone

The formants of your voice are strange and organic in that the second formant is rarely double the first--which is why you can make vowels and change your timbre...a guitar is set and only varies by string and by fret--it changes predictably and gradually.  When people sing, their vowels change fairly dramatically, even if trying to sing on the same syllable.  This is why the vw voiced electric guitar sound falls short, however put in a guitar pedal and the sine wave starts to become square. The formants can differ but are cut down to the same structure--enough distortion and all input formants are forced to become that of the pedal (and the sounds become compressed to the same volume).  ----  Solution: LOTS of distortion or bit-crusher + light distortion or distortion + wah.

2: Attack

THE most important part of imitation.  Psychology shows that people cannot differentiate instruments by tonal/timbre differences but easily do so by hearing the attack.

When striking a guitar string, the string is over-stretched when picking (finger or pick pull then release) or when hammering on (strings relax after being pulled over the fret). So, when you sing one note you'd have to fall down into it, so to speak, quickly and consistently, no matter which way the 'lick' goes.  This is especially difficult on ascending licks.  As we know the best way to sound like something is to repeat it, so the microtuning won't matter live.  What will matter is the sound of the pick to the string...just about all electric guitarists (save Kevin Eubanks, et al) use a pick when playing leads so it is crucial to have the quick squeal of the string as it's being struck. It's tough to do quick, so I cheat!  ----  Solution: Turn up the volume to be on the verge of feeding back so that while you are not singing, the line starts to scream, then hit your notes more staccato to let the scream happen-don't fight it! Use a volume control or wah to "turn off" the intentional feedback.

3: Pitch

Pitches of a guitar are set, barring the oft imitated bend, whammy, or tremolo.  Listen to even the best at this (like Jamal Reed) and their pitch either fluctuates on fast runs or they slide into notes.  It is organic to the voice and though it can be trained out, is almost going to be impossible to be perfect. The guitar is fixed, so either sing PERFECTLY or cheat again (why not?!).  ----  Solution: Auto-tune (12 or 8 note). I would argue that it allows you to sing more like yourself and is actually more "true" or "pure" than stifling yourself into regularity.

It seems, quite simply, that the less an instrument sustains a pitch, the easier it is to mimic with the voice. Just about anybody can do a decent trumpet, I can pull off a decent cello, violin, xylophone/marimba, or banjo and have heard a few others do it, but I've /never\ heard a spot-on piano or electric guitar (save one time with Mister Tim).
