With the close of the Winter Olympics, you may find yourself missing your daily fix of thrilling competition. But worry not! The Vocal Olympics are here!  Just like ice dancing, but without the ice. And the dancing.

Ok, maybe there will be some dancing.

The first annual Vocal Olympics will take place on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at the Nameless Coffeehouse in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. The Nameless is New England’s oldest volunteer-run coffeehouse, steadfastly presenting some the nation’s best acoustic acts since 1966. The Nameless was one of the first venues to take a chance on burgeoning acts like Tracey Chapman, Jay Leno, Andy Kaufman, Rik Ocasek (The Cars), Dar Williams and Ellis Paul. And on the 6th, this illustrious venue presents another first: an a cappella competition!

After sending out a call to artists nationwide, 5 finalist groups were chosen to compete. The only thing that the chosen groups have in common is that they consist of 7 or less people, and they’re instrument-free. You’ll hear pure vocals from groups of diverse styles, ages (from teenagers to…well, never mind), and approaches. Each group will do a 3-song set to try to win the hearts of the crowd and the judges, the latter of which are an expert panel of music pros.  The show will be hosted by legendary storyteller Tony Toledo, who will introduce all the groups, and get the crowd involved while the scores are being tabulated.

Nameless Booking Coordinator Mare Streetpeople says, “A cappella groups today are known for their amazing singing abilities, and it is their exquisite bare voices that are featured. No instruments, electronics or other accompaniment backs them up. What you will hear at this show is 100% pure vocal magic. Out of the many submissions received, the 5 finalist groups in this competition each have something special to offer, which you will hear direct from their Olympics-worthy voices.”
