BRATTLEBORO, VT -- The undeniable hipness of a cappella is no secret to Brattleboro audiences, who have filled the Latchis Theatre six years in a row for the annual showcase of college singing groups.

Now, a cappella is going national -- and a Brattleboro singer is helping to lead the charge.

NBC announced Monday that eight groups have been chosen to compete in "The Sing-Off," an American Idol-style a cappella singing competition which will be televised on Dec. 14-16, with the finals on Dec. 21.

One of those groups happens to be the Beelzebubs of Tufts University, who have wowed the Brattleboro crowds the last two years and feature local singer and 2007 Brattleboro Union High School graduate Penn Rosen.

Rosen and the Bubs, as they are called, will be vying for a $100,000 prize and an Epic Records/Sony recording contract.
