SoJam is, in and of itself, an incredible weekend. Full of classes, seminars, master classes, concerts and after parties, this diverse weekend is intended to provide something for everyone, and to drive all participants to aspire to their highest potential. In the spirit of a bit of friendly competition and good old fashioned showmanship, the SoJam weekend kicks off with a high energy, high stakes collegiate competition!

The competition is designed to encourage and showcase the staggering creativity and performance quality of the many college groups throughout the Southeast. This year, our selection panel faced the difficult task of choosing only six groups to compete from over 20 diverse  and high quality submissions.  After a long deliberation, the selection panel decided on an extremely varied and creative lineup of groups that included the University of South Carolina Cocktails, Elon University Sweet Signatures, Southern Virginia University Fading Point, Emory University Aural Pleasure, University of Georgia Accidentals, and Florida State University Reverb. Because SoJam is in November, unlike in the ICCA, these talented groups have only a few short months from the start of their respective school years to perfect their twelve minute competition set --- and this year’s competitors clearly put in a lot of hard work to prepare for the show.

The groups arrived Friday afternoon after a long day of travel ready to compete. It was a sincere pleasure of mine getting to work with these groups, but an even bigger pleasure to get to watch their fantastic sets. After our three judges (CASA President and CARA and Sing Coordinator Julia Hoffman, A Cappella producer Ed Boyer, and CASA Founder and Vice President Deke Sharon) had seen the six fabulous competitors, they left the hall to deliberate some special awards while the final scores were tabulated. The stage was then turned over to vocal pop sensations Eclipse who kept the audience entertained during deliberations. The final results were as follows:

Best Arrangement: Caitlin Yuhas from Emory Aural Pleasure for “Admiration”
Best Soloist: Marcus Hines from UGA Accidentals for “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing”
Best Vocal Percussion: Dele Opeifa from Southern Virginia University “Fading Point”
Best Choreography: UGA Accidentals and Elon University Sweet Signatures
Audience Favorite Award: UGA Accidentals

1st Place: Emory University Aural Pleasure
2nd Place: University of Georgia Accidentals
3rd Place: Elon University Sweet Signatures

Congratulations to all of the groups who competed, and thank you to all who made the event possible! To hear more about the event and to hear the winning groups featured, check out the November 15 episode of Mouth Off here!
