Wishful Singing, an a cappella ensemble consisting of five young Dutch female singers, won First Prize in the Vocal Groups category of the Tolosa Choral Contest in Spain last Sunday.

This international contest is highly respected and one of the most renowned competitions to be found in the world of a-cappella singing. The aim of the festival is to bring together the best choirs and ensembles in the world. This year the selected competitors came from Europe, America, Asia and Australia.

Wishful Singing presented two a cappella programs at the Tolosa Choral Contest. These programs were set to strict contest requirements, with regards to the choice of repertoire, time duration, performance and diversity of music styles. The panel of judges evaluated Wishful Singing’s performances and returned a score of 90 percent - the highest achieved of all twenty participating choirs and ensembles at the contest.

Members of the international panel described Wishful Singing’s performance as: “an explosion of musicality”, “a fresh and renewing way of singing”, “a spectacular execution of excellent music”,  “ an unsurpassed performance”, “they are the future”.

The Tolosa Choral Contest is the first competition that the ensemble has participated in at an international level. Earlier this year Wishful Singing won first prize at the 23rd ‘Dutch Vocal Ensemble Festival’. In addition to this the Dutch general public recently voted them winner of the ‘Search for Cultural Talent’ campaign, set up by the National Broadcast station Nederland 2.

The ensemble, consisting of five young Dutch female singers, performs  a cappella repertoire encompassing different musical styles from all quarters of the world. Whether performing a tranquil renaissance harmony or a groovy arrangement of a classic pop song, the quintet always manages to touch and convince a listener by way of their powerful expression and flawless vocal blend. With their beautiful voices, shared sense of humour and feel for the theatrical they have been able to bring pleasure to their audiences time after time.

Wishful Singing all started in 2005, during a sailing trip on the lakes of Friesland. The five singers had become acquainted through the Netherlands Youth Choir. They decided to combine their musical talent and a new vocal ensemble was born!

In March 2009, Wishful Singing won first prize at the 23rd ‘Dutch Vocal Ensemble Festival’ in Almelo, and recently the Dutch general public voted them winner of the ‘Search for Cultural Talent’ campaign, set up by the National Broadcast station Nederland 2.

Numerous major venues in the Netherlands have invited the ensemble to perform. Furthermore, Wishful Singing has been broadcast live several times over the last few years on Dutch national classical radio station, Radio 4. Always eager to expand their knowledge and talent, Wishful Singing has attended masterclasses with the Finnish vocal group Rajaton and the world-renowned a cappella group The King’s Singers.

"In the World of A Cappella singing it is rare to find a truly new voice on the well subscribed circuit. Many have tried to copy and emulated the greats over the years, but originality will always excite in a way that mere imitation cannot and having sung in the King's Singers for well over two decades one sees many come and go.

However, working with and being around this wonderful group has been both delightful and inspiring on so many levels. Wishful Singing have that incredibly rare ability to move one to tears with the sheer beauty and pureness of their beautiful voices and at the very next moment leave one on the floor in a helpless pile of laughter. That ability to take us and our emotions to the extremes and back again is the trump card of any artist.

Their flawless blend and uncanny ability to sing as one together gives the listener the impression that they were born to sing to together, and thank goodness they do! Their love of singing, for one other and for sharing their talents with others is simply infectious. Thank you dear Wishful Singing for sharing them with me!"
