Freshman Samantha Graham said the Sexy Pitches “were amazing!” and the audience definitely agreed.
Next up, the men and women of Absolute A Cappella took the stage, opening with “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and some beatboxing. The rest of their set included “Walking on Broken Glass,” “True Colors” and even some Hanson.
Graham also enjoyed Absolute A Cappella, especially when Kevin Callahan “hit that crazy high note” during the closing song of A-Ha’s “Take on Me.”
Junior Jamie Zottola said she liked both performances and was excited to see the “rich community of singers at New Paltz.”
“Extra points for Hanson!” she said.
Co-President of Absolute A Cappella Alia Rezek said that she was proud of the members of her group and thought the show went “amazingly well.”
“The group that has come together this semester is very talented and great things are going to come from the group in the future,” she said. “I hope those who attended the show enjoyed their performance as much as I did.”
After a short intermission, the Potsdam Pointercounts took the stage in matching jerseys that read “Counts” on the front and made them look more like a little league team than an a cappella group. If the audience had any doubt on whether they were going to see a ball game or some singing, their doubts disappeared as soon as the 12 men of the group opened their mouth.
“It was really exciting to have the Pointercounts come to campus,” said Rezek. “They’re a really awesome group.”
The Pointercounts started with a spoof of the Family Guy opening before going into Maroon 5’s “This Love,” complete with dance moves, including a perfectly choreographed macarena. The rest of their set included: “Pretty Woman,” which got the audience snapping and dancing along; The Verve Pipe’s “Freshman,” which left the audience almost breathless; and “I Want to Grow Old with You,” from the Wedding Singer which got some laughs and every girl in the audience to exclaim “Aw!”
The Pointercounts showed they had a little gangsta under their sweet demeanors as they broke into R. Kelly’s “Ignition (Remix),” which was a huge crowd pleasesr. They finished with a traditional Irish blessing and were met with a standing ovation.
“I really liked it,” said Graham. “The crowd was having a lot of fun, everyone was really into it.”
There were some laughs, some dancing, a lot of singing and all in all, a good time was had. If the remaining American Idol contestants had seen the show, they would surely have been put to shame.
