Ben Folds has just launched a contest. In his words: "I'm making an album of a cappella versions of my music to be performed by the best university groups we can find. This idea was motivated by a number of amazing university a cappella versions of my songs I came across on YouTube. Some of these brought to light unique nuances and perspective that is necessarily absent from the original recordings as the songwriter and singer happen to be the same guy. I was moved and inspired. Some of these versions were an improvement in my humble opinion and it would be a great opportunity to capture some of this." Ben Folds wants 12 or so tracks from collegiate groups, submitted via YouTube. And if you make the cut, he's going to send one of his producers to help you record a Ben Folds tune. WOW!

Note: The deadline is November 14th. More info:

MIXED COMPANY of Yale will be touring California from January 3rd to 10th, 2009, with plans to be in the Southern California area from the 3rd to the 7th.

“We have entertained a range of audience sizes from classrooms to stadiums and our sets last anywhere from 1/2 hour to 2 hours. We also bring our singing to the classroom, guest teaching music classes and assisting eager music and choir students with a variety of vocal pursuits and challenges. Our workshops for student choirs include warm-ups, blending, pitch, and tone exercises, and we teach a basic arrangement of one of the songs (for example, a popular choice is Seasons of Love from the hit musical, "Rent") in our repertoire to perform together with the students of your choir. After the performance and/or workshop, we provide a question and answer session to field any questions on life at Yale, our college admissions experiences, and our time in an a cappella group.

As for our rates, for most schools and venues, we ask for $650 for a 40 minute set and $500 for a 30 minute set. Sets shorter and longer in length can certainly be requested, and of course, our fees are negotiable with our business manager if your school has special circumstances. Our diverse repertoire has offerings from jazz, Broadway, pop-rock, soul, and oldies favorites. All of these different options make our offerings very flexible.

Vocal percussionists and singers sought for a Contemporary A cappella League (CAL) group; we'll do arrangements from old-school funk to modern alt-rock, anything with a big sound, as we grow up to 20 members. Arrangements offer a variety of voice parts as well as multiple vocal percussion parts.

More info:

Also, looking for an assistant to help in recruiting and development.

“After 8 years as a professional touring a cappella singer (mostly with Four Shadow, based in Minneapolis MN), I moved here last year to run a small business. I'm starting to get the itch to sing again. Ideally, I'd like to find a very good men's choir (I keep thinking back to my days in the Cornell Glee Club), though a mixed group like Minneapolis' Vocal Essence would be great, too.”

Directors, contact me through to get contact info.
