Northwestern Undertones

Founded in 2001, the Undertones are a co-ed a cappella group from Northwestern University. In addition to our three mainstage shows every year, we do a ton of gigs all over the Chicagoland area. Just this past year we lent our voices to fraternity and sorority events, fundraisers for other performing arts groups, and charity events for Dance Marathon, Habitat for Humanity, and others. We also hosted the International Championships of High School A Cappella (ICHSA) Midwest Semifinal, contributed music to a staged reading of National Treasure, and in the winter sang at holiday parties and went caroling.

The Undertones tour nationally and internationally. Previous tour locations include Washington D.C., California, Miami, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Boston, and Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2011, we made almost $5,000 at a sold out show in Houston, Texas. For this year, we are currently in the planning stages for a California tour!

CARA nominated, ICCA award-winning, and regularly featured on various a cappella media like the Mouth Off! podcast and The A Cappella Blog, the Undertones consistently demonstrate excellence in competition. In 2007, we won our ICCA Quarterfinal as well as Best Choreography. In our 2010 Quarterfinal and Semifinal, we won Best Arrangement, placing among the top a cappella groups in the Midwest. And in 2012, Matt Kania won Best Vocal Percussion.

The Undertones have released three studio albums. Our latest album, “Boots and Cats”, has received tremendous recognition from the a cappella community. Robert Dietz, vocal coach and arranger for NBC’s The Sing-Off, noted that the arrangements are, “some of the best I’ve heard from the collegiate community,” and Singstrong Executive Director Jonathan Minkoff commented that, “you can just tell that these singers can fill the room and sing to the last person in the last row.” Our recording of "Before the Worst" was selected for inclusion on the album "BOCA 2011: Best of College A Cappella 2011”, RARB (The Recorded A Cappella Review Board) listed “Eet” as one of the Songs of the Year in 2011, and Matt Edmonds’ arrangement of “Before the Worst” was nominated for a CARA (Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award) for Best Mixed Collegiate Arrangement.

Our next album will finish being recorded in the fall and be released before this school year ends. While we pride ourselves on maintaining a very high level of musicianship, most importantly the Undertones are a group of friends who love to sing together, love to laugh together, and love the work that we do.
