ARLINGTON, MA -- Ten years after the group started, they released the 1998 CARA award-winning vocal jazz album, “Chameleon”, a disc critics universally acclaimed as one of the best jazz releases to be found. Then they went on a temporary hiatus, hung up the Until-Further-Notice sign on the door and went about their business as individuals: doing solo work, joining other groups, getting ‘real’ jobs – whatever it is people do when they’re not singing together. Then, the other day, I got an email – someone walked past the Vox One door, and the sign was gone.
What does this mean? It means one thing and one thing only: gear up for some incredible vocal jazz, because Vox One is back!
It’s been 7 long years, you say? They might have been pronounced dead by this time, you think? Think again! Vox One is back: back on the stage, back in the studio, and back in business!
After graduating from Berklee, it seems they all made their way back to teach voice and ear training. After being colleagues for a while, they decided that one of the things they really wanted to do was to sing together. So Vox One re-formed out of the ether, and now, on Friday, December 2, 2005, they’re releasing a brand new album and celebrating the release with a hopping concert.
Have things changed? Sure they have. Their voices have changed a bit; some of the members have kids now, and they’ve all got responsibilities and pressures, but when I ask them how things are working out with the group, their response is the same: “[It’s] like riding a bike.” They all know their places within the group, where they’re supposed to be, how they’re supposed to sound, etc., and that knowledge has helped them to jell quickly and get back into their old form.
In the long ago of 1998, they did a fair number of original tunes, and that doesn’t look likely to change. Their new album consists of 9 new arrangements/compositions, 5 improvs, and one old favorite they sang when the group first formed. That sounds true to form to me. Have they outgrown some of their older material? Sure. But don’t worry; they’ll be adding new energy and maturity to some of their old tunes, and you’ll be blown away by the results.
Come out and catch them in concert if you can – they’re not planning on any extended tours at the moment - but their new CD will undoubtedly keep you coming back for more; so rush out and buy it post haste! Vox One is back – man, it feels good to say that.
Vox One appears at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, MA on Friday, December 2. The show is at 8pm and tickets are $16 and $19. The show is expected to sell out, so get tickets early. www.regenttheatre.com/events/vox_one.htm Add as favorites (30) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 1526
