NASHVILLE, TN - Wilson "Lit" Waters, Jr., a member of the Grammy Award-winning Fairfield Four gospel group, has died at his Nashville home of cancer, family members said. He was 74.

Waters, who died on Thursday, became a member of the black a cappella band in 1982. Founded in the early 1920s, the Fairfield Four launched its career in radio then broke up in the 1950s when radio formats changed.

The quartet reformed with different members in 1980 and Waters, a tenor, joined other members in winning two Grammys — for best traditional soul gospel album "I Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray" in 1998, and for contributions to the hit movie soundtrack "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" in 2002.

In 1989, the Fairfield Four was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts.
