The oldest all-male a cappella group strikes a note for Aveek Bhowmik in Mumbai
the Yale Whiffenpoofs are all set to bowl over listeners in Mumbai with their repertoire of classic numbers at the Hard Rock Café this evening and at the Experimental Theatre, NCPA on July 9.
The group’s signature ballad The Whiffenpoof Song became a hit in 1927 and has become so popular that it has been recorded by Elvis Presley, Count Basie, Perry Como and The Statler Brothers.
Founded in 1909, the ‘Whiffs’ began as a senior quintet that met for concerts at a renowned tavern in Yale. Evolving over the years into a tradition, every year, 14 senior men at Yale were selected to be in this revered musical troupe, creating the most eclectic sounds sans instruments.
