Jim R. Schmitt, the last remaining member of the internationally known Schmitt Brothers Barbershop Quartet and prominent Two Rivers community member, passed away Thursday morning after a short battle with cancer. He was 76.
Schmitt, along with three of his 10 brothers, Joe, Fran and Paul, won the Society of Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America's international championship in 1951. Schmitt sang lead for the quartet.
The quartet traveled more than 2 million miles and appeared on more than 2,500 programs while recording 78 songs. Following their international championship, the group appeared at Carnegie Hall and on the Ed Sullivan, Arthur Godfrey and Lawrence Welk television programs.
