The competition continues, as young singing hopefuls from all over China strive to be the best, at China's National Young Singers' Contest. Two ethnic groups stood out Sunday night, in the competitions sponsored by China Central Television.
This group comes all the way from Xinjiang Uygor Autonomous Region. The singers presented a traditional folk tune of the Kazhak minority. The memorable "Huumei", or throat singing technique, common among nomadic peoples, enthralled the audience. The technique makes it possible for one singer to deliver multiple voice parts simultaneously. When singers perform "Huumei" in unison, listeners may feel they are hearing something resembling a large orchestra.
Another highlight came when the group "New Voices" took the stage with their well-rehearsed a capella rendering of "Taking the A Train". The spirit of competition is intense, the atmosphere lively, but the winner of this year's young singers' contest is still to be determined.
