Page 1 of 2 As MP3 players plug a growing number of us into a 24/7 soundtrack, it's a paradox that the most low-tech and communal music is also exploding in popularity.
A cappella singing – what our great-grandparents called a barbershop quartet – began a comeback in the early 1990s, and now has devotees on every campus in the English-speaking world.
There are enough singers and fans in this city to sustain a mass event – Acappellooza. The University of Toronto Acappella Coalition hosts its third incarnation tonight at the Diesel Playhouse.
It's but the tip of a North American iceberg that includes local and national competitions and championships. There's even a Recorded A Cappella Review Board, which lists opinions on 767 albums released since 1994.
