While I try to promote self-sufficiency as much as possible in my columns, I also realize that not every group has someone who wants to take the responsibility (not to mention the time) of being the internal producer. In this case there are many options, some local to you, some not, but now we have a great starting reference:
Utah's own Dovy Paukstys, in a fit of AcaUberGeekyness, has put together a very helpful website called MyAcaProducer
While it is still technically under construction, there is a lot of information up there already so you can start shopping for that producer who will give you that big Aca-break you've been looking for! By the way, the site doesn't give you this tip, but if you click on the little pictures you get a more detailed bio (profile page.)
I was amazed to see that there are more than 30 people now specializing in the production of Contemporary A Cappella music, and I'm sure there are more out there in other parts of the world - if you are a producer/recordist specializing in A Cappella, add your profile to the list!
Once you have an idea about who to work with (whether based on price, location, or awards they have won, etc), then make sure you listen to as much of their work as you can. Just because they have won awards or live in your town doesn't necessarily make them a good match for your group. It works the other way as well - I myself sometimes turn down good paying work because I just think someone else's style fits better with a particular group's sound and goals, and will recommend that they go to this other person. Make sure you are compatible with the person(s) who are shaping your ultimate sound!

Please feel free to suggest subjects for me to write about in this column - I would love to know what still mystifies all of you readers out there about recorded A cappella music! You can email me here at bill@casa.org
