Jerome Collins says that when he and his bandmates in the a cappella group Straight No Chaser sing a cover, they don't try to emulate the instruments on the original with their voices.
Instead, they try to create a similar but new sound that stands on its own.
"The voice is a beautiful thing; it doesn't need to be pretending to be something else," Collins said.
Straight No Chaser will perform on Saturday, Aug. 25, at Ives Concert Park in Danbury.
At live shows the group performs a wide assortment of material that includes classic rock, reggae, soul and modern pop covers.
The 10-member a cappella group was originally formed by college buddies at Indiana University in the mid '90s.
