The event that NoTa had deemed the “Epic Weekend” came, and passed, a little too fast in the eyes of those who attended the first annual Social Media and A Cappella Conference. SMACC gathered students and professionals alike April 1-3 in Syracuse, NY opening with a collegiate competition known as the Friday Night SMACC Down.

The competition featured five groups from New York, including winners 8 Beat Measure from RIT. Syracuse University’s Main Squeeze, Groovestand, and Orange Appeal joined The Stonybrook’s High C’s in the battle to open for the renowned SONOS and NoTa at the conference’s professional showcase on Saturday night.

Overboard also joined the scene for an inspiring deliberation performance.

“It was refreshing to end the night with Overboard,” said competitor Heather Newkirk. “The variety of their song choices really kept everyone interested and entertained. They even serenaded the audience!”

Workshops began Saturday morning. In an interesting marriage of topics there were sessions on everything from advanced arranging to new media production. A few sessions, such as one led by CASA board member Greg Rubin on fan management, created a bridge between the two worlds. Hash tags allowed the world to follow the conference and individual workshops through twitter, and technology was by no means lacking.

Saturday wrapped up with the long anticipated professional showcase.

“It was incredibly inspiring for me as a musician,” said conference attendee Kayla Rice. “It made me remember again why I became involved in a cappella and renewed my love for it”

Both SONOS and NoTa, while incredibly varied in styles and genres, both gave incredible performances. Tight harmonies, and audience engagement, ended with a mosh-pit of students crowding the stage as NoTa closed with their arrangement of “Down.”

“It was a special event; so much talent, so much learning, so much aca-bonding, so much sharing,” said David Pinto of NoTa. “All in just 3 days!”

While Sunday's workshops took a bit of a slower pace, it was a fitting way to wrap up the weekend.

Josh Goodman, 8 Beat Measure member said “ SMACC managed to create an environment that sparked innovation and creativity that has never before been seen at similar conferences. It's definitely an event to keep your eye on in the future.”
