Piano in Ruled by Secrecy
Posted by JohnDavidMaybury on 11/13/2011I know that when something is cool, it's cool, but does anyone have any insite on why Ruled by Secrecy was chosen to be on Sing 8 rather than making room for another all a cappella song?
When something is cool, it's cool...
Posted by JohnDavidMaybury on 11/26/2011The last post seems a little unclear to those whom don't know this album. I want to clarify what I meant when I said "when something is cool, it's cool." I basically meant that I think that the only reason why Ruled by Secrecy was on the album is because it's a great song that we would all enjoy listening to. It, however, has a piano recording on it, which is not a human voice or even a sample of a human voice that was tweaked in any way to be any type of vocal-sonic foundation. That honestly makes me kind of sad. I wanted to know why it would even be considered to be on the album because of that.
This is sings mission statement (taken from http://acappellarecords.com/compilation/sing):
"Sing was created to showcase a slice of the best of contemporary a cappella to both the existing vocal music establishment and those who may be relatively unaware of the a cappella movement. The purpose of the compilation is to give talented groups and individuals an opportunity to be heard on a worldwide stage by placing their music alongside some of the biggest names in the a cappella universe. Each Sing album includes groups and tracks that stretch the limits of the genre, including groundbreaking original music from some of the hottest new stars. In listening to any Sing album, our hope is that each listener will appreciate the growing creativity of the a cappella art form and will be challenged and even inspired to bring this ingenuity into their own local spheres of vocal performance. Sing is the only compilation that has garnered a perfect RARB score ever - and we have done it multiple times!"
Doesn't having Ruled by Secrecy on Sing 8 delegitimize this mission statement and the album's integrity of being just an all a cappella album and almost the entire mission statement? The song could maybe even be considered jeopardizing the entire Sing series, because of being on there. The best of the best a cappella songs are chosen to be on Sing albums and because of that, the people in charge of Sing have a responsibility to guide the a cappella community by example about what is the current leading inspiration and movements in the a cappella world... which would not be a piano. A piano is backtracking in that inspiration and movement.
I love buying albums like Sing and showing my friends who are not passionate about a cappella music, my favorite artform. When given the chance, I always volunteer to drive and I put on a cappella music and play it for people who have never heard of the artform or who don't understand it. I just really hope that this is taken into consideration in future Sing album decisions by the people whom are responsible for being in a leader in the a cappella world and claim the album to be the same. That said, I do appreciate all of the people and hard work that goes into the Sing albums and them wanting to share that great song with me. I just wish it were shared with me in another way... And if anyone knows why Ruled by Secrecy was chosen to be on the Sing album,
Also, I still would really like to know. Not because I want to cricize, but because I want to understand the thought process of the decision and be convinced that it is okay for a song that isn't all a cappella is okay to be on the Sing albums. :)
