For Avi Kaplan, the journey through musicianship all started with his involvement in the choral departments of two Visalia schools.
The 22-year-old groomed his skills as a singer in the choirs of Divisadero Middle School and Mt. Whitney High School. From that point forward, he knew he wanted to use his voice to reach people. Now, the Visalia native will get the opportunity as he competes on NBC's reality competition, "The Sing-Off."
Kaplan and his group, Pentatonix, will face off against 15 other a cappella groups for a shot at a top prize that includes a recording contract with Sony Music and $100,000.
Still, as he readies himself for the primetime spotlight, Kaplan can't help but thank the city of Visalia for some of the opportunities that he has received.
"I love Visalia," Kaplan said in a phone interview from Sony Pictures Studios, after a whirlwind day of rehearsals. "The schools I went to were amazing and everyone in the community really supported one another. That's what I really appreciated."
