A Mount Pleasant based singing group hit the right note and was crowned the 2012 North Carolina/South Carolina District Chorus Champion.

Now the Palmetto Vocal Project is gearing up for an international competition in Toronto this summer.

The Palmetto Vocal Project is a 26-man acappella group that started just this past September.

"Our main goal was to build an acapella choir that did different genres of music whether it be gospel, contemporary acapella, gospel, barber shop, choral and to do it to the best of our ability," said Derek Street, co-director of Palmetto Vocal Group.

The group sings at various events in the Lowcountry, but their most recent achievement was a big one.

"We are one of the few choruses that were able to go and win a district level competition the first year out," said Tom Nawrocki, member of the Palmetto Vocal Project. "This group of guys has worked very hard and the excitement of winning that district competition the first time was just awesome."
