The timing was just right: on March 5, The Funky Divas of Gospel, in their twentieth anniversary year, share the stage with a cappella rockers Tuckermans at 9 to benefit the music program at the Eliot United Methodist Church on Route 236 in Eliot, Maine.

“Dave Brown, a good friend and former group member, recently became the music director at Eliot United Methodist,” says Divas front man Jim White. “We had promised to do a show to welcome him and raise money for the church's music program”. At the same time, White and Tuckermans at 9 founder Mark Miller have been talking about doing a joint show and looking for a venue. “Opportunity came knocking," White continues, “and here we are. We’re calling it the Cure for Cabin Fever Concert… and don’t you think people are anxious to get out of their houses, out from under this snow, and spend an evening in the warmth of great music?”

Both groups are longtime audience favorites, both locally and throughout New England. Besides lead vocalist White, the Funky Divas of Gospel (funkydivasofgospel.com) are Dan Poland, vocals and guitar; Barbara Whitney, keyboards, percussion and vocals; Chris Avery, bass and vocals, and Dan Fishbein, drums. Also on vocals are Vicky Avery, Susan Stewart, Jean Graunke, and Maddy Tourville. Seven-voice Tuckermans at 9 (tuckermansat9.com) performs a cappella versions of well-known pop, rock, blues, and light jazz favorites, mostly from the 1960s to today. "Our voices make all the music," explains Miller, who sings baritone. "No instruments or pre-recorded instrumental tracks are ever used. Everything you hear, including what sounds like brass, electric guitars, or drums, is just us." Rounding out the group are soprano Ashley Gove, altos Kam Damtoft and Frances Lipe, tenors Walt Porter and Daryl Robertson, and bass Bill Hersman.

"Two great groups for one low ticket price," says White. "Just $10 at the door and all for a good cause. This really is a show for all ages." Adds Miller, "And a wide range of musical tastes. There's something for everyone!" Audience members can call Eliot United Methodist Church at (207) 439-6593 for more information on the performance and the special post-concert reception.
