The Rose City Sing-off started two years ago as an annual showcase of local high school talent, and today it's a David vs. Goliath a cappella battle of the ages.

In 2012, the Rose Festival held its inaugural high school a cappella championship, pitting nine Portland-area groups in an elimination-style tournament, but so far the competition has been a little uneven.

Wilsonville High School's group Soul'd Out -- which has competed nationally and even appeared on NBC's "The Sing-Off" -- took home the top prize in both 2012 and 2013, leaving their peers in the dust as they hop-scotched through the tournament on their way to bigger competitions.

The Portland sing-off has managed to remain amicable, but Soul'd Out director Sue Schreiner admitted her kids' continued success isn't always so welcome. "Last year I got the feeling that for a friendly competition some of them are getting tired of hearing about us," she said.
