Unstrumental, Calabasas High School’s a cappella singing group, bested many college groups at the Los Angeles A Cappella Festival at UCLA on Jan. 27 and 28.
The coed group claimed some fame by being the only high school a cappella group to compete against college singers, but it was their performance that won over the judges in the end.
Unstrumental won second place overall and awards for best arrangement for the song “Samson” by Regina Spektor, best staging and crowd favorite.
Calabasas junior Brooke Wetterhahn won the best female vocalist award.
Although UCLA’s a cappella group Scattertones won the top title at the festival, the 16 Calabasas singers were thrilled with their performances and the outcome of the competition, which was waged against two UCLA groups and a cappella ensembles from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and the University of Oregon.
