It could be an oracle: A glowing dial with a lens in the middle blinks with images. It hums in the key of E inside a blue-domed gazebo, which sits atop a temple of learning: Tisch Library, high on the hill that Tufts University occupies here.

This is "Harmony in the Age of Noise," an interactive sound-art installation designed by Bruce Odland. It may not tell you the future, but it will certainly tune you into the present, as you dial through the sounds of Medford.

Made up of South Island women, the a capella group was recently honoured as the third best choral group west of Manitoba.

“It’s always been a high achieving chorus,” said director Julie Smith. “They set their goals for this year and achieved every one of them.”

The 70-member chorus travelled to Surrey in April to compete in the annual regional competition. The group was up against more than 20 choruses from B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan. Aside from finishing third overall, the group’s quartets, Accent and Euphoria, won fourth and sixth overall, respectively. Euphoria was also named most improved quartet.

Now, Moir is back with the fourth edition of the Kaleid choral fest, a four-day event shared by Woodstock and London. It brings together top vocal ensembles with students and community choirs.

Rajaton were guests at an earlier edition of Kaleid. The 2008 guests are Juno-nominated Toronto vocal quartet Cadence, another a cappella ensemble. Moir is the fest's artistic director. She's also the artistic director of Kaleid's host choir, the Woodstock Fanshawe Singers.

Grapevine’s intro for each group was a parody of a familiar song and a parody of each group. The first group to perform, Mixed Company, received a censure for its improper attempt at a contraction, MoCo. The climax of their set was the theatrically preformed Come Sail Away by the Styx, featuring Chris Klaniecki ‘10 complete with a one-feather sailor’s hat and a sense of wanderlust. I won’t reveal it, but expect some theatrical surprises by Klaniecki in tonight’s performance. Hats off to MoCo…literally.

People interested are asked to submit a 30 second or longer video of an a capella version of an Alicia Keys song, and the competition is open to females between the ages of 21 and 30.
