While many Boston University students were at parties in Allston or attending basketball or hockey games Saturday night, others were singing their hearts out and enjoying the sweet sounds of student a cappella groups.

For the fourth year in a row, BU's In Achord hosted the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella at Morse Auditorium for a crowd of nearly 500, most of whom were students who danced and clapped along with the show's upbeat tunes.

A Cappella Concert Rocks

The line stretched from the entrance to the Student Union Theater all the way back, almost to the stairs leading into the Food Court.

Despite a $3 entry fee, students sold out the theater Friday night to see UConn's eight a cappella music groups perform. Half of each entry fee was donated to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, for a total of $750.

"It's cool to give back to the UConn community," said Bryan Banville, a 4th-semester biomedical engineering major and member of Extreme Measures.

And the a cappella groups gave back to the UConn community with their talents and with the money raised. The other half of the money raised will go to the eight groups that performed.

'SIX' isn't quite enough for a show
Written by CASA NewsLink

A couple of years ago, the Knudsen Brothers made a huge impression as one of the acts in an edition of "V -- The Ultimate Variety Show" at the Tropicana.

During the 10 or so minutes allotted, the sextet wowed the audience (and this critic) with its unique act combining wonderful a capella harmonies with the brothers' ability to accurately recreate the sounds of such instruments as drums, bass and trumpet.

....The first couple of times he does his "human beat-box" riff by approximating with astounding accuracy the sound of various percussion instruments, the effect is nothing short of astounding. But by the fourth or fifth song, the astonishment has turned to tedium, and you realize why most acts use actual musicians playing real instruments.

Review: Superb choir lifts the spirits
Written by CASA NewsLink

BEAUTIFUL, breathtaking, and brilliant, this was a midwinter, rafter-raising performance of songs to lift the spirits and warm the heart.

Swindon Scratch Choir, a relatively new choral outfit in this town of phenomenal choirs, proved once again what a wealth of talent lies latent during working hours, when the duty-bound are in their day jobs, but erupts in the evenings and at weekends, when many good day-jobbers do what they really really want.

And, in the case of this choir, it is singing songs from around the world.

In fact, it was the fabulous variety of songs, all sung a capella and in the choir's own vocally challenging but aurally exciting arrangements, that made this such an entertaining, uplifting and memorable night.
