Question: Why is there a lack of female involvement in a cappella outside of a singing capacity?

Who knew (girl group) 702 would be quote-worthy? However, when talking about the role of women in contemporary a cappella, the line seems very appropriate (and we’ll conveniently ignore the fact that the song is about keeping a man, considering the topic matter).

While it is true that women have become more involved in a cappella outside of simply contributing their voices (particularly in regards to arranging), it is still a male-dominated industry. The history/roots of a cappella are based in men’s groups, but then again, that can be said about most things. And women have fought to work their way into everything else (in and out of A Cappella Land). So, why not vocal percussion? Why not CD production? And why are most people so put off by female groups? How many more questions can one ask before it becomes redundant? Oh, nevermind.

Johns Hopkins A Cappella Scene Boasts Variety

BALTIMORE, MD -- December is the season of a cappella concerts. This past weekend Vocal Chords and Octopodes preformed to packed houses in Bloomberg, and the Mental Notes and Allnighters are performing Dec. 9 and 10. For a school with little support of the arts the huge participation and audience turnout was impressive. But given the talent of the many a cappella groups on campus, it is no great mystery that Hopkins a cappella has so many avid fans.

Friday night the Vocal Chords entertained the audience with their wide variety of music, ranging from pop to rock to classics. The group conists of fifteen members from all different grades. The group was formed in 1995 and since their inception has released four a cappella albums. Their final performance of the year will be at the Harmony Music Therapy Club on December 10th.

Opening with the powerful Bonnie Raitt classic "Let's Give 'Em Something to Talk About," sung by senior Jess Brandt, the Vocal Chords kicked off the show in good form. The catchy oldies song was a refreshing break from all the pop and rock that a cappella groups usually perform.

Creating and Sustaining Inner-Group Harmony

Not long ago, the following question was posted to the a cappella internet newsgroup (rec.music.a-cappella):

“Has there ever been a band that was not dysfunctional in the working together / interpersonal sense?”

If you’ve ever watched VH1’s “Behind the Music” or read a pop music biography, I’m sure you’ll share the same fear. One of our culture’s mythologies is that musicians live in a retarded adolescence without the ability to act as adults, resulting in the ever-looming acrimonious breakup. Oh, the famous lead such soap opera lives!
