Music makers: High school students master rock 'n' roll

As Cantaffapella's Rock and Roll Chorus tours the state and the eastern seaboard, members say they are not only getting to do something they love, but are learning first hand the skills they will need to enter the music industry.

"I just love this music," said charter member Krysta Timmerman, 16, of Howell. "It's a musical blend of voices without instruments."

Barbershop quartet to perform at Norman Rockwell weekend

On the Go, one of Maine's premier barbershop quartets, will perform Saturday night, Aug. 16, to complement the Norman Rockwell-inspired short plays.

Featuring bass Dave Sweet of Kennebunk, baritone Wally Duplessie of Windham, tenor John Nielsen of Scarborough and lead Larry Newth of Mechanic Falls, this group has entertained audiences throughout Maine.

Root7 connects county with a cappella tunes

The line at the lemonade stand was long as the smooth sounds of local musical group “Root7” filled the Richmond farmer’s market on a recent Friday. The sweet smells of fresh baked bread filled the air as people danced under the falling afternoon sun.

“Dip de dip ... walking in a coal mine, going down and down, whoop, I might have slipped down ... ” an a cappella rendition of Lee Dorsey’s “Working in the Coal Mine” rang through the market as well as other fun favorites for kids and adults alike. A group of more than 30 sang along.

Root7 began two years ago with beat boxing man Joe Antonioli, of Williston, and funky baritone Ben Russell, of South Burlington. Soprano Karen Taylor Mitchell of Colchester joined, too, as did a total of seven. Hence, the name, Root7. But the name does have a deeper meaning.

Me Myself and I

On July 5, 2008 they performed before the great Bobby McFerrin at the Warsaw Summer Jazz Days. On July 15 they supported Manu Chao. There are two of them and a beatbox and they do almost everything with their voices. They have been performing together less than two years. They – Me Myself And I – a name you should remember!

Magdalena Pasierska is the pure, emotional voice. Zgas is a human beatbox, changing completely the meaning of traditional hip-hop beatbox style. Michał Majeran, surrounded by equipment, uses his bass voice as a background for the others. He uses all sorts of bizzarre effects, including Alessis AirFx which he operates without touching, just in the air. The music is a fresh mixture of Jazz, Hip-Hop, Ethno, Rock, Blues, Reggae and Classical style.
