More than a boy band

I have to be honest: Before I encountered the Hyannis Sound I wasn't the biggest fan of a cappella. The reason is competition. How do I possibly compete with guys who can sing?

I went to one a cappella show this past year at school and watched, my mouth agape with horror, as the girls in the audience swooned like their favorite boy band had come to town. I would start crooning myself if I could, but I simply don't have the voice for it, so I remain bitter. That is, I remained bitter until I met the guys of the Hyannis Sound, which performs concerts around the Cape each summer.

Alley Cats provide fun in Calimesa

Over 500 people attended Calimesa's second show of its annual series of Concerts on the Green at the Calimesa Country Club. Returning for their fourth year, the doo-wap singers, the Alley Cats, entertained their audience with songs of the 50s and 60s coupled with engaging wit and humor. Their audience participation numbers were especially popular.

The group's founder, Mando Sonseca, couldn't say enough about how talented his group is while they render songs with unmatched harmony performed a cappella. The Alley Cats group, representing 22 members, have entertained throughout the United States since 1987. It all started 21 years ago at Fullerton College in Orange County.

The Bobs: Irreverent A Cappella

From their beginnings giving singing telegrams, The Bobs' founders (Gunnar Madsen and Matthew Stull) recruited bass singer Richard Greene and Janie Scott in the higher register to complete the a cappella quartet.

In addition to its original tunes, the group covers Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" and performs an award-winning arrangement of "Helter Skelter" by The Beatles. The Bobs' performances are a display of vocal acrobatics; combined with the group's irreverent lyrics, the result is an internationally acclaimed sound. In a session with host David Dye, the quartet sings material from its latest CD, Get Your Monkey off My Dog.

His art is sound - A beatboxer creates music to accompany dancers

The 30-year-old Baltimore man is not your traditional musician. He relies on a microphone, amp and the incredible range of sounds he creates with his mouth, lips, tongue and voice.

Shodekeh is a beatbox artist, and he simulates sounds ranging from drumbeats to horns, strings and other musical instruments. For the past three weeks, he has been seen in and around the dance facilities at the American Dance Festival, which just wrapped up its 75th anniversary season.
