If there was one thing neighborhood kids of the 1950s learned from their impromptu a capella street-corner “concerts was the concept of “less is more.” They quickly discovered how to shape raw talent into tight vocal harmonies becoming, in essence, instruments as well as vocalists. It was music in its purest form. It was all they knew how to do because they didn't have anything else. Most came from meager backgrounds and it didn't cost a dime to take up a little space on the street corner.

Disadvantaged Philadelphia youth who could not afford instruments used their own instruments -- their voices -- to make music. Their playful yet passionate style of nonsense syllables evolved into an intricate class of group harmony that delivered some of the most popular hits of its time. On Saturday, August 9, 2008 from 1:00-7:00 p.m., Penn's Landing Corporation proudly celebrates this historic, charming genre in its birthplace at the Philadelphia Doo Wop Festival. Visit the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing, located on Columbus Boulevard at Chestnut Street, for a rare opportunity to hear some of the greatest names in Doo Wop for FREE during this fabulous event produced by the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service Education Center.

While entrance into the Philadelphia Doo Wop Festival is free, donations will be accepted for the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service Education Center. Jay Mednikow had considered the usual hobbies of the Southern gallant, but riding around on golf carts or horses didn’t much appeal to him. With three kids and a huge jewelry business to attend to, there wasn’t time for a lot of country club outings.

He just wanted to sing. Music was a reasonable escape from the world. The anti-work. A cathartic expression of the soul. It made him happy. It made his wife happy.
