A cappella is the most popular sport at Drew University, and this was proven once again at this year’s Back to Classes Jam, hosted by 36 Madison Avenue, the all-male group, in the new Space of the Ehinger Center. The only issue with The Space was the actual space – I arrived at 6 for the 6:30 show and managed to snag a front-row seat, but by 6:15 there wasn’t a seat to be found. Spectators ended up sitting along the walls, in front of the stage, on the high-top tables, and in the case of any latecomers, standing on furniture from the lounge behind The Space and looking in through the open doors.
The turnout was truly remarkable for a campus long-characterized by an utter lack of student participation in extracurricular event. All of the Above, the co-ed group, went first, marching to the stage in a parade of capes and masks after deciding on a theme of “superheroes,” hopefully kicking off of new year of themes that are easily understandable by the audience.
