AUDITIONS:

NOTE: The entire musical is a cappella. This is an ensemble piece. All must be exceptional musicians (MUST read music, some degree of sight-reading is preferable) and versatile comic actors. All of the actors (other than Boxman) play multiple parts. Seeking a multicultural cast; a true “melting pot” of NYC. Vocal ranges listed represent roughly 2 octaves. A cappella experience a plus. For auditions all songs will be accompanied by a pianist at first, not a cappella. Prepare contemporary, uptempo pop songs. Can choose from Jason Robert Brown, Andrew Lippa, Tom Kitt, Ricky Ian Gordon, recent Alan Menkin, Michael John LaChiusa, and other similar artists. There will be audition cuts from the show, plus sides.

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

WOMEN
JANE/MEZZO (Early to mid 30s): any ethnicity; Vocal Range: F# to G, needs Eb belt for solo. Solos are in contemporary pop style. Instantly likeable girl next door with a sense of humor. Funny but vulnerable. Jane is the major role, plays other comic characters as well. Must be a good belter with a seamless upper mix.

ALI/SOPRANO (mid to late 20s): any ethnicity; Vocal Range: A to A#, solos fall fairly low in standard soprano range. Solos are in contemporary pop and folk styles. Versatile comic actress able to play multiple parts/ages including Ali, a single-in-the-city girl dealing with lost love. She seems out of place in the city, not a New Yorker. Ability to belt/mix, but also sing straight-tone in upper register.

MS. WILLIAMS/ALTO (mid 30s to mid 40s): any ethnicity; Vocal Range: F to F. Solos are in big soul-belt and R&B styles. Versatile comic character actress able to play multiple parts/ages including Jane’s temp boss (a strong, 40-something Gospel-singing executive) and a bitchy subway booth lady. Solid low notes required; high belt a plus.

MEN
BOXMAN (20s to 40s): any ethnicity; Amazing Vocal Percussionist/Beatboxer with Bari/Tenor voice (doesn’t sing very much). Charismatic, quirky subway performer/comedian/poet/philosopher. The “heartbeat of the city,” his rhythm and energy drive the show. CAST

TRENT/TENOR (late 20s to mid 30s): any ethnicity; Vocal Range: A to A, needs high A for solos. Solos are in country and contemporary pop styles. Versatile comic actor able to play multiple parts/ages including Trent, a southern gay man whose mom won’t let him out of the closet. Must be able to play over-the-top comedy as well as honest vulnerability.

NATE/BARITONE (early to mid 30s): any ethnicity; Vocal range: F to F, covers the bassline down to a low F while the Bass is singing solos. Solos are in rock and contemporary pop styles. Versatile comic actor able to play multiple parts/ages including Nate, an ex-banker trying to find himself. Jane’s romantic interest. Must be able to cover basslines in addition to harmonies.

CHRIS/BASS (mid 30s to early 40s): any ethnicity; Vocal range: D to Eb. Vocal percussion skill a plus; solos are in rock, soul and rap styles. Versatile comic actor able to play multiple parts/ages including Chris, a sports-loving, beer-drinking guy’s guy. Must have a big resonant bass sound.
