Greg Rubin Elected President; Promises Increased Outreach, Fundraising and Focus

The Contemporary A Cappella Society (CASA) has announced its 2014 board of directors. Greg Rubin, Vice President for 2013, has been elected President. Outgoing President Tom Anderson was elected to the position of Vice President in a transition that has spanned the last several months.

“I am incredibly honored to step into the role of President to help usher CASA into its next phase. Tom has done an excellent job as President over the last year and I couldn't be happier that he has agreed to be Vice President,” said Rubin in an email statement.

Over the last year CASA has expanded its events program to six major festivals nationwide, major partnerships with broadcast and cable TV networks, the relaunch of the popular Mouth Off podcast and record traffic on http://casa.org.

Due in part to pop culture forces like NBC’s The Sing-Off, Pitch Perfect and the growth of pre-/post-collegiate singer audience, interest in a cappella and vocal music is at an all-time high. As the leading non-profit for a cappella music and vocal music worldwide, CASA is in a market leading position to help the larger a cappella community find and connect to their interest.

As a media/entertainment senior consultant with a privately held consultancy and former director at Sony & Jive Records, Rubin brings a unique perspective to his new role. In his presidential platform and direction to the new CASA board, he notes his desire to focus on long term success vs. short-term payoff, fundraising and to support any and all people helping the a cappella art form.

He states, “2014 will be a very different year for CASA.”

Danny Ozment changes his role from Member-at-Large to Director of Outreach

Current Treasurer Steve Ryan temporarily assumes the role of Director of Awards and Compilations from outgoing Director Julia Hoffman

Kate Pientka is elected Director of Development from outgoing Director Meg Alexander

Blair Baldwin is elected Director of Events from Amanda Cornaglia who held a dual role

We've positioned the new team to pick things up where we left off so that CASA Events can offer an even higher level and variety of programming,” Cornaglia notes.

With the increasing importance, scope and visibility of CASA Events, that position will now report to the President moving forward.

“Adding and shuffling board members helps maintain the energy, focus and vitality of the CASA personnel,” said Chambers. Long time board member and current Secretary Stefanie Chase notes that while CASA was founded in California, this is the first time the board isn’t regionally focused in the state and may be better able to reflect the community's needs coast-to-coast. CASA program managers and ambassadors continue to be based across the nation and globally.

While outgoing Director of Development Meg Alexander will be moving to Australia, the hope is that she can help foster greater relations with the rapidly-growing vocal scene halfway around the world.

“Working for CASA has been an absolutely incredible experience that has allowed me to meet and learn from people all over the world, in addition to fostering my personal and professional growth,” she said.

Julia Hoffman’s direct presence will also be sorely missed. In ten amazing years, she helped direct CASA through a tumultuous and dynamic time, first as Secretary, then as Director of Awards and Compilations -- including the popular Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards (CARAs) -- and as President.

“My thanks to Julia seem like crumbs compared to what she has done for CASA and a cappella in general over the last 10 years! We will miss her -- there's no two ways about it,” Rubin said to the board.

Moving forward, outreach and development will be a key focus in 2014. Danny Ozment will be tasked with helping CASA connect to the larger vocal world. Organizations like the Barbershop Harmony Society, Sweet Adelines and the American Choral Directors Association are only some of the alliances the organization will seek to foster.

Pientka adds that while there is significant opportunity for the organization in the non-profit world there is a huge upside for businesses in the for-profit space to leverage CASA to explore uncharted territory in vocal music.

“This can complement the for-profit businesses in our community and through partnerships and relationships, elevate the community overall,” she says. Pietka will be leading the CASA development front from all angles and has already brought on and onboarded Diana Blanchard as the sponsorship manager for CASA Events.

Finally, to help focus content efforts, stalwart Web Content Manager Amy Malkoff will be moving to the CASA Communications & Marketing team. She will continue to liaise with the CASA Technology team to help make the vision and goals of the CASA brand a reality. In 2014, this may include a new Website, branding and mission statement.
