A Cappella Goes Indie

{mosimage}Principal photography starts Monday August 1st in New York on the independent film "Shut Up & Sing," an ensemble comedy about a group of guys who sang together in a college a cappella group and are now reuniting 15 years later to perform at friend's wedding. The film is written and directed by Bruce Leddy, a one-time member of the Williams Octet and later the New York group The Lemmings. It stars Mark Feuerstein (Good Morning Miami), Molly Shannon (Sat. Night Live), David Harbour (Broadway's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf"), Reg Rogers (Runaway Bride, Analyze That), Rosemary DeWitt (Cinderlla Man), and many more, including former Hyannis Sound vocal percussionist Samrat Chacrabarti. An a cappella "super-group" led by former Rockapella founder Sean Altman recently completed pre-recording tracks for the movie. The group includes fellow Rockapella stand-outs Elliot Kerman and Charlie Evett, as well as Altman's singing mate from The Groovebarbers, Kevin Weist, and Broadway singer Michael Winther. The soundtrack will feature several college group recordings including the Tufts Beelzebubs version of "Take Me Home" by Phil Collins and Academical Village People's arrangement of "Kate" by Ben Folds Five.

A Cappella As Art

In the world of pop and rock, cover bands dont generally command the same respect that original groups do. Imitation is perceived as a less impressive skill than innovation. Creation trumps interpretation.

Welcome

Hi. I'm Jonathan Minkoff, President of CASA. I live in New York City where I perform, produce, record, compose, and practice law. I seek out strange new life (you) and new civilizations (your group, the a cappella community, ) and I boldly go ... uh... well I boldly go wherever I'm going. I'll try to steer you clear of pitfalls, guide you to opportunities and generally share this beautiful and bizarre journey. These are the voyages ... (cue high soprano "ah!")

Welcome Message

Greetings from Jonathan Minkoff, President of CASA and Deke Sharon, Past President of CASA! It is our profound pleasure to welcome you to the greatest a cappella community under the sun. How do you know you’ve come to the right place? If you’ve ever found you’d rather sing thirds than melodies … If you’ve ever started imagining how songs on the radio would sound with just the “good parts” and realized that was a cappella … If you’ve ever looked at a band tuning, or worse -carrying their instruments, and just laughed … If you’ve ever come to the realization that there’s no such thing as a truly in-tune piano … If you’ve ever tried to say the word pfFFF-tsi-ts-ki-dmkaka dm … and succeeded… Then you’ve definitely found your new home. CASA is here to help give you the information, contacts, training and opportunities that will allow you to take the world of a cappella, rich and diverse as it is, to the next level. We want to share with you the amazing music that’s out there. And we want to help you share your music with the world. Our charitable programs bring a cappella music to young singers who wouldn’t otherwise have heard or been moved by what this music can do. We bring the best singers in the world together to share their secrets and perform their music. We help groups form. We help them grow. We help them record, arrange and perform. Welcome to CASA. We can’t wait to hear what you do next. Yours In Harmony, Deke Sharon President and FounderCASA, The Contemporary A Cappella Society of America and Jonathan Minkoff Executive Director, East Coast A cappella Summit
